Ammonia is very toxic to the body and can be formed when there are too many toxins, endotoxins can cause it, vitamin deficiencies, infections, farm chemicals in our food, vitamin deficiencies can cause it and oxidative stress can cause high ammonia levels. When we have high ammonia levels it alkalize our digestive system and our bladder. They are normally acidic. Most pathogens thrive in an alkaline environment. Candida goes from commensal to pathogenic in an alkaline environment and then it will start to alkalize even more. This kills our good bacteria that regulates our gut and bladder PH. I rarely ever fart now I have reach gut homeostasis.
If not addressed it can cause brain swelling.
Toxins can cause Lysinuric protein intolerance which causes high ammonia levels when protein is consumed. I did a post on proteinuria it should help with this. If not addressed this can lead to copd or NAFLD.
One of the differences between acidosis and alkalosis is that nerves become hyper sensitive in alkalosis and we become excitable. In acidosis nerves are depressed and we become drowsy. Alkalosis is usually caused by fungal infections acidosis by infections that produce endotoxins like Lyme or a viral infection.
Symptoms include brain fog, depression, delusions, neurological problems, swelling in the throat, gut dysbiosis, interstitial cystitis or frequent bladder infections, gall stones the list goes on and on.
One of the differences between acidosis and alkalosis is that nerves become hyper sensitive in alkalosis and we become excitable. In acidosis nerves are depressed and we become drowsy.
High ammonia levels will cause high glutamate levels which will cause anxiety and many other mental issues.
In acidosis a person will have high plasma potassium levels and in alkalosis they will have low potassium levels.
Glyphosate which is found in most of our food causes a mineral imbalance which can cause high ammonia levels.
It can also lead to neuropathy.
Infections especially Lyme can cause high ammonia levels. Ammonia alkalizes and we are supposed to be acidic.
Our bladders are supposed to be acidic. Infection can make them alkaline which kills our good bacteria.
CBS issues can cause high ammonia levels.
High ammonia levels causes brain swelling.
Pathogens thrive in an alkaline environment and will cause ammonia to be produced to protect themselves that is why it is important to get ammonia levels down.
Protein intolerance can cause this. I addressed that in my post on porphyria. Protein intolerance is one symptom of porphyria. It is referred to as phenylketonuria when you eat protein or foods high in phenylalanine you will get sicker.
Supporting the BH4 pathway to correct phenylketonuria is very important. It is one of the causes of autism.
If you have a blocked or upregualted CBS pathway , or an upregulated BH4 pathway and don’t address it this could make you ill. Most with those issues would benefit from taking P5P, selenium, and magnesium citrate. Also three times a week molybdenum and manganese. Do not use magnesium citrate more then twice a week. The body recycles it and it can build up in the body and start causing liver and kidney damage and destroy red blood cells. Citrate also reduces oxalates.
If not addressed you can have seizures, depression, difficulty swallowing and many other problems.
It is very important to address the things that cause nitrosative and oxidative stress. Things like inflamation, nutrient deficiencies, infection, metabolic issues. They both can cause high levels of ammonia.
The liver and kidneys are important for detoxing ammonia. These herbs really help. Remember homeostasis is he goal. Do things in moderation.
We need glucose found in fruits and vegetables and even honey, maple syrup and organic unsulfured blackstrap molasses to keep ammonia levels down.
Issues with our CBS pathway could also cause high ammonia levels. Anything that causes high sulfite levels can cause high ammonia levels. Gene mutations only present when there are many things wrong, once I got my ammonia levels and sulfite levels down I could start consuming high sulfur foods again. I still take the nutrients once in a while to support those pathways so it does not become a problem again. Glyphosate also effects the pathways negatively so we should try our best to eat organic. Also if we have gut dysbiosis then we need to address that because that raises our sulfite and hydroxy radical levels which also causes high ammonia levels.
If we have an infections the endotoxins effect these pathways which will raise ammonia levels so we need to detox endotoxins which I covered in my post on how to recover from endotoxemia.
Gut dysbiosis causes high ammonia levels, from the high sulfite levels. This effects the brain.
This adds to the problem because high sulfite levels keeps the good gut bacteria from reestablishing.
Bismuth which is what Pepto Bismo is , reduces sulfide levels.
Not getting enough cholesterol, high sulfite level, and oxidative stress can inhibit bile production. This make H Pylori go from commensal to a pathogenic form. Bile helps detox ammonia from the body. If it feels like a brick is in your stomach after you eat and you get gassy then you have low bile production which will lead to low stomach acid production. Your food is fermenting instead of being digested which will also cause high sulfite levels and high ammonia levels.
Low bile will inhibit our ability to break down fats which are needed by the body.
Things that increase bile.
Taurine helps increase bile productions.
Butyrate produced by our gut bacteria protect the gut and the gut bacteria. When we are low in butyrate our gut becomes inflamed. I ate butter or ghee which is high in butyrate. Our butyrate producing bacteria even regulate our metabolism.
Zinc helps reduce ammonia levels.
Calcium D-Glucurate helps reduce excess ammonia.
Bicarbonate rich mineral water will reduce ammonia.
