Written by Lee Stevenson, sorry I am not a very good editor.
These are my notes I on herpes I am posting for educational purposes in hopes someone can build on these and use them to learn and educate others. This is not medical advice , if you are ill you should seek the help of a knowledgeable functional medicine practitioner. Always use organic. There are too many toxins in non organic and you will be defeating the purpose of taking certain things or eating certain things.
Most herpes viruses including chicken pox and EBV effect the body in very similar ways. RNA viruses especially COVID uses the same methods herpes does to infect the body.
If you are dealing with herpes an antiviral ointment should also be used while doing a protocol to kill the herpes that is in the neurological tissue in the skin.
Much of this may help prevent cancer because the way herpes and RNA viruses effects the cells and mitochondria they turn on the genes that make a person more prone to getting cancer.
This is a list of herbs and supplements shown to be most effective against herpes viruses.
Lysine, Lemon Balm, Honeysuckle, musciformis, most algaes and sea weeds especially red, osmundoria obtusia, turkey tail mushroom, chicken of the woods mushroom, hen of the woods mushroom, houttyunia, resveratrol found in bright colored fruits and vegetables especially grapes, rhubarb root, aloe vera, St Johns Wort, Eleuthero, Rhodiola, Self Heal, dandelion.
Glycerol inhibits viral and bacteria infection. It prevents nerve damage. Low levels in the body can cause fatty liver disease. Palm Oil is , and soy oil is high in glycerol. Coconut oil contains glycerol.
Glycerol also prevents nerve damage and is need for fatty acid metabolism. The body cannot process fats if we do not get enough carbohydrates and the immune system cannot function if we do not get enough carbohydrates. Glycerol increases tolerance to cold and increases survival rate during extreme cold exposure.
If you have herpes limit exposure to excess cold and sunlight it can activate the herpes viruses.
Meditating on things that make you happy or meaningful things is important. Learning to handle stress in a way that stress does not negatively impact your health will help and avoid stress when possible.
Mitochondrial respiration becomes inhibited. This should be restored. Increasing Cytochrome C helps. Chinese Lizard tail herb helps restore cytochrome C and restores mitochondrail respiration. It has sedative effects so should be taken at night.
Mangosteen fruit or peel extract induces Type 1 IFN which kills the herpes virus. It has sedative effects and if taken for too long it can start to make one of the eye lids droop.
Activated Charcoal and lactic acid traps viral virions preventing them from entering cells. Most lactobacillus produce lactic acid. Inducing autophagy helps clear herpes from the cells. Things like grape seed extract, molasses, and citrus extract help induce autophagy. Urothalin A, spermidine, resveratrol, Omega 3 fatty acids, trehalose, lithium which can have side effects, nicotinamide, N-acetylglucomsamin, curcumin, melatonin, kallistatin and endogenous serine protein and berberine induces autophagy.
B-catinen is increased by herpes which causes systemic inflammation , especially in the brain. Inhibiting B-catinen also inhibits herpes virus replication.
B-catenin inhibitors:
Bicalian found in scutellaria, plantain herb and fleabane.
Burdock root inhibits B-catenin and activates AMPK
Chloranthus inhibits B-catenin
Curcumin inhibits B-catenin
Panax gensing does and also increases AMPK.
Resveratrol inhibits B-catenin.
Liverwort
Magnolia Bark
Angelica promotes degredation of B-catenin.
Ellagic acid found in berries
Unicaria tormentosa (cat’s claw)
TFEB is decreased by herpes viruses. Copper , calcium, PGC1a, pomegranate juice, mTOR inhibition increases TFEB. Melatonin increases TFEB. TFEB inhibition permits HSV to enter the mitochondria.
Increasing PAK2 prevents HSV from hijacking mitochondria. Oxidative stress reduces PAK2 so it is important to take antioxidants. If you experience heart palpitations when you take antioxidants it means you are TH2 dominant and need to correct it. Excess oxidative stress prevents the body from being able to clear infection.
Lactobacillus Iners should be decreased. Lactobacillus Rhamnosus GG should be avoided. Lactobacillus Paracasei , Lactobacillus gasseri, and Lactobacillus crispatis decreases Lactobacillus Iners. Lactobacillus iners is usually overgrown in those who have interstitial cystitis.
These microbes help fight viral infection including herpes.
Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus Brevis, Lactobacillus delbrueckii, Lactobacillus planatarum, Lactobacillus gasseri, Lactobacillus vaginosis, Lactobacillus jensii, Enterococcus Faecium, Clostridium orbiscindens.
Lactobacillus also improves tight junction health which is compromised by herpes. Glucosamine/chondroitin complex and bone broth can help to improve tight junction layer health.
Herpes increases Interferon Gamma (Inf-y).
Things that reduce INF-y:
Omega 3 fatty acids
moderate exercise
olive leaf
curcumin
boswellia

Avoid red meat to avoid excess glutamine. Eat it in limited quantities. Do not take vitamin E in excess get it from food. Avoid excess glycine.
Women may need to increase progesterone. Eggs, vitamin A, vitamin E, K2 , zinc, evening primrose oil, pine bark extract can help to increase progesterone and balance hormones. Omega 3 fatty acids and foods high in B vitamins. Pine bark extract may help also.
Clostridium orbiscindens helps balance hormones.
Avoid excess lectins, and inflammatory foods like pasteurized milk , wheat products, processed foods and processed sugar.
If TH17 is high consume hemp seeds, pistachio nuts, mustard, gotu kola and querciten.
Herpes dysrupts mucin production especially in the gut and vagina. To improve mucin production sulfation needs supported. B12, B6, molybdenum and betain also known as TMG (trimethylglycine) support sulfation. Sulfation also needs threonine, cysteine, proline, calcium, potassium, glucosamine/chondroitin complex, Omega 3 fatty acids, complex starches, plant proteins are all needed to improve mucin production. Lactobacillus spp also improve mucin health.
Many with herpes infections have been found to have a coinfection. The most common was mycoplasma. Pau Darco, coconut oil, mugwort, berberine, and probiotic Mycoplasma vaccae help to reduce mycoplasma infection.
In women if there is an overgrowth of ureaplama , aerococcus or gardenella vaginosis they need addressed because they make herpes more virulent.
In men if there is an overgrowth of finegoldia, peptinophilus or staphylococcus it needs addressed before herpes can be fought.
Balance IL-1b inulin and oligofructose reduces Lippopolysaccharide (endotoxin) which balances IL-1b. Stimulating the vagus nerve balances IL-1b. Humming and singing stimulates the vagus nerve. Nicotinamide helps to balance IL-1b.
IL-37 reduces skin lesions caused by herpes. It also reduces inflammation. IL-37 is increased by AMPK and increases physical endurance, improves insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance. IL-37 reduces joint inflammation and prevents rheumatoid arthritis. Many lactobacillus species increases IL-37. UDP sugars found in seeds especially help , sesame and crushed flax seed also help balance IL-37.
Herpes inhibits adenosine production. We will cover it in more detail later. To increase adenosine increase zinc, vitamin D, adenine, and nitric oxide. Phosphoticic acid also needs increased. Eggs, sunflower seed, fish and beef liver increase phosphotidic acid.
Increase AMPK
AMPK prevents herpes from hijacking many processes in the body and it is also antiviral. Increasing T3 increases AMPK, increasing Nitric oxide, increasing ketoines, Alpha lipoic acid, green tea, grape seed extract, bitter mellon, rooibos, panax gensing, quercitin, olive oil, red sage, berberine, burdock root, DIM, zinc, Omega 3 fatty acid, mushrooms, glucosamine/chondroitin complex and L-carnitine increases AMPK.
Heperanase is increased by herpes which reduces heparin. Heparin is antiviral and it also prevents excess blood clotting and excess soft tissue damage. Heparin needs increased to prevent excess blood clotting. Heparin is usually low in interstitial cystitis and inflammatory bowel diseases. Low heparin can cause soft tissue swelling and soft tissue break down.
Parabacteroides distansonis decreases heperanase. Berries, resistant starch , rhubarb root, Lactobacillus casei shiroto, Lactobacillus gasseri, and grape seed extract all increase Parabacteroides distansonis.
NDST-2 is inhibited by herpes. It increases heparin. Angiotensin 2 (ACE) inhibitors increases NDST2. NDST-2 requires glutathione, magnesium, calcium and adenosine-3-phosphate, sulfur, glucosamine/chondroitin, and glucuronic acid. Carbohydrates are also needed to produce heparin. Hypermethylation decreases heparin levels. Most sea algae especially red increases heparin. N-acetylglucosamine helps increase heparin. UDP sugar from seeds is also needed. Hemp, sesame and crushed flax seed have some of the highest levels of UDP sugars. Glucuronic acid is also needed. It is high in apples, cruciferous vegetables, kimbucha and the white part of citrus fruit. It can also be taken as a supplement calcium-D-gluturate.
Some ACE inhibitors are hawthorn, garlic, cheeses like gouda, cheddar, manchego and crescenza. Whey protein, raw unpasteurized milk, oily fish, pomegranate, omega 3 oils. Lactobacillus Helviticus produces metabolites that are ACE inhibitors.
Over expression of heparin can cause Type 1 diabetes, under expression causes Type 2 diabetes.
CD98hc increases intracellular glutathione and cysteine. Herpes compresses CD98hc which result in mitochondrial dysfunction.
TRPV-inhibits herpes virus and prevents it from compressing CD98hc. Omega 9 oils increases TRPV expression. Things that contain omega 9 oils are extra virgin olive oil, macadamia oil, oloic and gondoic acid, mead acid, nervonic acid, ximenic acid, elaidic acid found in milk fats, genoic acid is found in walnuts. Mead acid is found in catrilage. Eruci acid is found in mustard seed and arugula seed. Nervonic acid is found in Lunaria seed oil, and cardamin seed. Sacchoromyces cerervasiae also produces mead acid.

Arginine activates HSV and Lysine inhibits it.
Try and limit read meat it is high in glutamine and can cause HSV to increase. Glutamine should not be avoided but careful and letting levels get high. After being on a protocol for a while glutamine should not be a problem.
Mucin production needs increased. HSV inhibits mucin production in the vagina and in the gut.
Sulfation needs supported . I mentioned that earlier. Nutrients needed are:
sulfur, glutathione, threonine, cysteine, proline, calcium, potassium, glucosamine/chondroitin complex. Complex starches are needed, omega 3 fatty acids and plant based proteins. Most lactobacillus spp increases mucin and produce antiviral metabolites.
Apple cider vinegar decreases viral load.
Most with HSV have been found to have coinfections. Mycoplasma is the most common. Pau Darco, coptis, bayberry, mugwort and coconut oil help with mycoplasma.
If ureaplasma levels are high it must be addressed first along with any other overgrowth.
Increasing Type 1 interferon.
Curcumin, boswellia, Nicotinamide, scutellaria, vitamin D3, astragalus, magnolia bark, mugwort, red clover, berries. Pterostilbene which is more bioavailable then resveratrol. It stabilizes DNA. It is found in Pterocarpas Santalis (sandal wood), and rhubarb root.

Avoid excess glycine and get vitamin E from food. Avoid lactobacillus rhamnosus GG.
If experiencing immune over activation take hemp seed, eat pistachio nuts, mustard, gotu kola and querciten.
Nitric oxide balances adenosine levels. Adenosine is antiviral. Nitric oxide is also antiviral. Beet juice, pomegranate juice and leafy greens help to increase nitric oxide.
TORC2 reduce HSV infection. AMPK increases TORC2 expression. TBK1 expression increases TORC2. CBS pathway needs suported before increasing AMPK. Nutrients needed for sulfation also support the CBS pathway. Vitamin B6 and B12 are also needed. Vitamin C, glutathione, are needed.
Phosphatidic acid, phosphotidyl choline, lysophosphotidylcholine, and diaglycerol stabilize and activates mTORC2 Eggs, liver , fish, increases phosphotidylcholine. CDP-choline can be supplemented.
Things that increase AMPK:

Insulin like growth factor activates mTORC2 to increase IGF. Zinc, plant based protein, vitamin C, blue berries, magnesium, selenium, ceylon cinnamon, vitamin D, thiamine increases IGF. Taurine, astragalus, colostrum, acetyl-L-carnitine, creatine, ursolic acid found in spices such as thyme, holey basil and apple peels. Hydroxybutyrate increases AMPK. Sleep increases AMPK. CoQ10, eating oily fish, reducing inflammation increases AMPK.
Microbes that increase AMPK:
Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Bifidobacterium longhum.
HSV decreases adenosine. Adenosine kills HSV and other viral infections. To produce adenosine ribose, folate, adenine, are needed. Salt increases adenosine receptor activity. Adenosine causes sleepiness.
Food sources of ribose are poultry, oily fish, eggs, mushrooms, green and black tea, and food grade yeast. Raw honey is high in adenosine. Caraway seeds are high in adenosine.
NAD is adenosinedinucleotide and is needed for DNA repair and production. It is also needed to produce energy for the body.
NAD+ is decreased by HSV. Inhibiting PARP1/2 blocks this from occuring. Querciten, rutin, myricentin, fisetin, are PARP inhibitors. Inflammation increases PARP so needs reduced. Edible yeast increases Bacteriodes thetaiotaomicron which increases IL-1b which dcreases TNF-a and IFN-y which would reduce inflammation.
Vitamin A and HSV.
Herpes and RNA viruses like Covid seem to trick the body into thinking they are retinoic acid. This gives them the ability to hijack many function in the mitochondria and cells. To inhibit this increasing Vitamin A levels will help.
Retinoic acid is converted to all trans retinoic acid in the body. Beta carotene found in yellow and orange colored fruits and vegetables is converted to retinoic in the body. Beta carotene cannot cause retinoic acid toxicity but consuming bioavailable sources of vitamin A can cause vitamine A toxicity which can increase the risk of cancer. That being said when a viral infection has hijacked the mitochondria and shut down mitochondrial respiration bioavailble sources of vitamin A can help get mitochondrial respiration and other mitochondrial processes working again. Consuming things like retinyl palmitic acid and fish oil can increase retinoic acid levels which will help to restore all trans retinoic acid levels. HSV and RNA viruses inhibiting AT-RA production can cause fatty liver. It also inhibits the antiviral genes needed to fight RNA virus infections.
CYP26 removes retinoic acid from the body. Inhibiting CYP26 can increase AT-RA and mitochondrial biogenesis because AT-RA activates UCP1 which increases mitochondrial biogenesis. Mitochondrial biogenesis is needed to burn fat, produce energy for the body and to produce and repair DNA.
Nutrients needed to produce AT-RA are vitamin E, retinoic acid or beta carotene, zinc, vitamin A, iron, and copper. Also Nrf2 and PgC1b needs to be activated to produce AT-RA.
Best sources of vitamin A are fish especially oily fish, Cod liver oil, krill oil, milk fats, eggs, yellow and green leafy vegetables, orange fruits and vegetables contain high levels of beta carotene which the body converts to retinoic acid. Retinyl palmitate is one of the most bioavailable sources of retinoic acid.
Viral infection effects CRABP2 which is found in neurological tissue. Herpes upregulates CRABP1 which increases viral infection and causes retinoic acid resistance. Grape seed extract and nitric oxide help to correct this by increasing CRABP2 methylation which prevents retinoic acid toxicity. Lecithin and phosphotidyl choline are needed for proper retinol uptake. Sun flower seeds or oil is one of the best sources.
HSV inhibits RBP1 which causes insulin resistance and glucose intolerance by it’s effects on CRBP1/2. Inhibiting IE1/2 prevents viruses from hijacking CRBP1/2.
HSV causes CRBP4 overexpression through activation of RBP7. RBP7 inhibition prevents fatty liver disease , increases carbohydrate use and increases tolerance to cold. RBP7 induces PPAR-y and adiponection to prevent endothelial dysfunction and reduce oxidative stress when functioning properly. Antioxidants especially glutathione restores proper RBP7 function.
CYP26A1 degrades retinoic acid into metabolites that bind to retinoic acid receptors (RARs) and can be tetragenic (cause DNA damage and cancer) by causing ineffective activation of RARs and retinoic x receptors (RXRs) which causes retinoic acid signaling to be down regulated. Increasing retinoic acid corrects this. Inhibition of CYP26A1 can cause weight gain and low progesterone. If needed valerian inhibits CYP26A1 which would increase AT-RA.
MIR-214 is induced by retinoic acid, it’s induction reduces the expression of IE1/2 . IE1/2 expression is increased by HSV to disable the bodies antiviral defense.
Retinoic acid signaling is important for maintain proper estrogen levels. Retinoic acid prevents estrogen dominance through upregulation of mIR-210, mIR-23a, and mIR27.
AT-RA activation of RARB3 reduces fatty build up in the liver and increases fat buring. It inhibits CYP26 isozomes which enhances biogenesis. Nrf2 and PGC1a should be activated and zinc, N-acetylglucosamine should be increased before increasing retinoic acid levels.
Some things that activate Nrf2 is bile acid ursodeoxycholic acid produced by certain gut microbes. Ruminococcus gnavus, Clostridium baratti, Eubacterium aerofaciens, Lactobacillus planatarum produces ursodeoxycholic acid. Ursodeoxycholic acid improves bile flow, prevents gall stones, reduces inflammation and prevents oxidative stress. Some phytochemical Nrf2 activators are querciten, curcumin, resveratrol, and citrus peel extract.
Increasing PGC1a:
Light exercise increases PGC1a, improving adrenal health and reducing stress, increasing AMPK. Lithium in very low dose, but lithium can build up in the body and have many side effects.
Alpha lipoic acid increases PGC1a and PPARb which prevents excess protein degredation, prevents cancer, reduces inflammation , increases mitochondrial enzymes and increases liver regeneration.
Nitric oxide increases PGC1a, PQQ found in green peppers and pine bark extract increases PGC1a expression, olive leaf, nicotinamide, riboside, grape seed extract, carnitine and rhodiola also increases PGC1a. Activating SIRT1, CREB, and increasing AMPK increases PGC1a.
If you are TH2 dominant you may have high thyroid hormone levels. You will have to correct this before stimulating PGC1a because it increases thyroid hormones.
Akkermansia munciphilia increases PGC1a expression.
Cycling inhibition helps reduce B-catenin which is high in HSV infection. Inhibiting cyclin prevents high B-catenin levels and increases P27 levels which will turn antiviral genes back on that HSV has disabled. Inhibiting cyclin restores oxidative phosphorylation. Inhibiting cyclin stabilizes p27KIP1 by which prevents HSV from hijacking cells.
Inhibitors of cyclin:
Terminalia Chebula (mega tribulus) inhibits cyclin and increases p27
Berberine found in coptis, bayberry and other herbs
dysoxylum binectanfi
gardenia obtusifolia increases p27KIP1
Indole-3-carbinolin found in cruciferous vegetables inhibits cyclin and increases p27KIP1
Magnolia bark inhibits cyclin and increases p27KIP1
Trim26 is increased by HSV. Trim26 inhibits Type 1 interferon which prevents the body from being able to launch an attack against HSV and other viral infections. IRF3 activates Type 1 INF. Inhibiting DHCR7 increases IRF3. Resveratrol and luteolin activates IRF3.TBK1 activates IRF3 and increases AMPK, and SIRT1 which decreases viral infection.
Blood clotting caused by HSV, keep in mind other RNA viruses use these very same methods so will also cause excess blood clotting. HSV inhibit the uptake of cholesterol into cells resulting in blood clotting. HSV also increases heperanase which decreases heperan which causes excess blood clotting.
HSV inhibits PGI2 which prevents cells from being able to mobilize cholesterol resultinig in platelet aggregation causing excess blood clotting. Covid spike protein causes this to happen also. This is why those who have been vaccinated are experiencing excess blood clotting. Cox-2 inhibition can prevent this from occurring and prevents HSV reactivation.
Cox-2 inhibitors:
Berberine, vulgatis, coptis, bayberry, Isatis Tinctura (woad), scutellaria, carrots, hen of the woods mushroom, chicken of the woods mushroom, angelica, tumeric, bromelain, boswellia, hops, chamomille, celery seed, green tea, cruciferous vegetables, most spices, and gingko all inhibit COX-2.
HSV effects on mitochondrial respiration.
HSV causes a build up of phosphoethanolamine which inhibits mitochondrial respiration and impairs VPS4 an ATPase needed to prevent viral replication. Reducing phosphoethanolamine helps to increase VPS4.
Reducing phosphoethanolamine:
Pantothenic acid, magnesium, betaine (TMG, trimethyglycine), P5P, B12, folate and reducing methylation decreases phosphoethanolamine.
Increasing PEMT reduces phosphoethanolamine. CDP-choline increases PEMT along with B6, vitamin C , SAMe, ribofavin and zinc.
HSV inhibition of mitochondrial respiration inhibits beta oxidation which prevents the body from being able to remove hsv from the mitochondria. Lauric acid found in coconut oil increases beta oxidation. PGC1a activation increases mfn2. Mfn2 increases beta oxidation and autophagy. GLP-1 also increases mfn2. GLP-1 is produce in the gut when we eat food. It increases insulin. Insulin helps reduce viral infections. Glucose, fatty acids and fiber stimulate the production of GLP-1. GLP-1 improves glycemic control in the body.
HSV inhibits the mitochondrias ability to produce purine nucleotides needed for DNA production and quality control. Purine nucleotides inhibit HSV. One of the most important molecules for producing purine nucleotides is nitric oxide. Adenosine is an antiviral nucleotide. Increasing AMPK increases adenosine.
In order to overcome HSV inhibition of adenosine production AMPK needs increased, tetrahydrofolate needs increased. Tetradydrofolate is produced from folate, NADH, B6, B12, riboflavin, and dihydrate reductase.
Foods high in PABA increases folate levels which will increase tetrahydrofolate levels. Foods that contain PABA are eggs, organic non sulfured black strap molasses, organ meats, food grade yeast, spinach, and mushrooms.
HSV upregulates PTP1B. PTP1B is a tyrosine phosphotase protein. Upregulation causes breast cancer, type 2 diabetes and obesity. Inhibiting PTP1B should prevent this from occurring.
Inhibitors of PTP1B:
stearic acid, oleic acid, linolenic acid, bemic acid, margaric acid, pentadecyclic acid. Phelodendrin bark, most sea algaes especially red inhibits PTP1B.
Xyloyl transferase- increased expression inhibits viruses especially HSV. Xylitol increases xylosyl transferases. Excess consumption of xylitol can cause gas and diarrhea that quickly resolves once a person stops consuming it. Use xylitol in moderation. Xylitol also causes oxalates, phosphate and calcium to be excreted in urine so consume things that increase calcium and phosphate when consuming xylitol. Foods that increase calcium and phosphate are eggs, fish, seeds, legumes, asparagus, tomatoes, and cheese.
UDP-sugars are also needed to to increase xyloyl transferase. UDP sugars are found in seeds.
HSV increased production of heperanase reduces heparin which causes excess blood clotting, soft tissue inflammation and degradation. Nutrients needed to increase heparin are N-acetylglucosamine (NAG), sulfur, also sea algae increases heparin. UDP sugars from seeds are needed. UDP sugars also balance IL-37 which inhibits HSV. Crushed flax seed , hemp seed and sesame seed have some of the highest levels of UDP sugars. Inulin also balances IL-37 which prevents allergies. Inhibiting ACE can also increase heperan levels.
Some natural ACE inhibitors are raw unpasteurized milk, whey protein contains casokinins and lactokinins which are ACE inhibitors, lactoferrin is an ACE inhibitor and is in colostrum. Cheeses such as gouda, cheddar, manchego, crescenza are ACE inhibitors. Eggs and oily fish are ACE inhibitors. Pomegranate, hawthorn and Omega 3 fatty acids are ACE inhibitors.
Helicase inhibitors prevent the virus from attaching to the cells. Some of the most potent helicase inhibitors are red apples, lemon balm, honeysuckle, stephania cepharantha, pterocarpus satalinux (red sandal wood), geraniol found in rose petals, lemon grass, citronella, coriander and blue berries. Terminalia chebua, rhododendron and myrothamnus flabellifolius have been shown to be very effective against HSV’s.
Bismuth inhibits many viruses but can inhibit ATP production so should not be used for extended periods of time.
AGO3 can kill many viruses and it also stimulates mitochondrial repair mechanisms.
