Healing from chronic illness should start with the brain and gut.

Written by Lee Stevenson, sorry I am not the best editor.

This is not medical advice I wrote this for educational purposes.

I am going to discuss some causes of injury to the brain and things that may help a person to heal. Those who have had Lyme know what it is like it severely damages the brain and causes memory loss, mode swings, depersonalization and many other issues. Many of us who had Lyme had to work together to figure out how to heal our brains on our own. Something to take note of never take high doses of supplements that usually does more harm then good. Buy lower dose and if you need more then you can take more. These often times damage the heart and cause excess blood clotting , restricted blood flow and can cause myocarditis or tachychardia. If these things are not addressed a person could die. This also damages the HPA so the adrenals need healed. All these things take time to heal and a person cannot expect to heal overnight. Depending on how bad a person is injured it can take months to a few years to fully heal. A person will develop food sensitivities so should be aware of foods that alter their moods. Once they heal this will not occur. This is just to give people an idea of things they will need to do to heal. This is mostly going to discuss the brain. The genetic, mitochondrial, metabolic and other health issues will need addressed if you are going to heal. It is best to find an experienced naturopathic practitioner with a good record for healing people.

This is not comprehensive there is much more to healing the brain but I feel writing this could help people get a start and give them some things they can research that may help them.

There is another group of people that will experience these symptoms and that is those who has had to deal with excess trauma, or excess stress or has had their hear broken. They develop what is known as Takotsubo syndrome or broken heart syndrome. Those who have been injured by the Covid injections are developing symptoms very similar to Takosubo syndrome.

It is very complex healing the brain after injury from vaccines, a pharmaceutical drug, eating processed foods, eating food that are GMO, eating foods high in glyphosate, or other toxins. Stress can also damage the brain. Many who have had Lyme refer to it as Lyme brain. Those who have had Covid are experiencing very similar things as those who had Lyme. Gut dysbiosis , gut infection or gut injury will also cause this to occur. Whatever the cause it needs addressed. If it is an infection the infection needs addressed. If it is caused by a toxin a person would have to correct the health issues caused by the toxin.

The key contributors to the damage to the brain are the inflammation and oxidative stress that has occurred. This throws the immune system out of balance. This causes autoimmunity, and chronic illnesses.

A person who has dealt with these things are often times traumatized because they get abandoned by the medical community and often times abandoned or ignored by friends. They may even get treated like they are paranoid or crazy. Many who have experienced this develop Borderline Personality Disorder. When that occurs even after the person has healed their brain they will need to seek counseling from someone who is experienced with helping those who have BPD.

Low doses of selenium, iodine, and magnesium help. Usually I alternated between magnesium citrate and magnesium chloride.

Inflammatory foods such as wheat, animal protein, corn oil, canola oil, rape seed oil, vegetable oil and things that contain transfat should be avoided as much as possible.

Oils like fish oil, evening primrose oil, coconut oil, and avocado oil are anti inflammatory and may help. Melatonin is a very potent antioxidant and anti-inf

Eating fruits helps especially ones low in sugar like pomegranate, berries and cherries.

Most are deficient in nitric oxide. Leafy greens, beet root, and pomegranate can help to increase Nitric oxide levels.

Often times sulfation is effected and would need corrected. Things like pyridoxal 5-posphate (P5P) , vitamin B12, CoQ10, low dose molybdenum, low dose manganese and eating foods high in folate will help with sulfation issues.

Often times the gut microbes are out of balance this will cause hormone imbalances. These things would need addressed. Increasing urseodeoxycholic acid producing microbes will usually decrease inflammation and oxidative stress fairly effectively. Increasing the butryate producing microbes reduces inflammation. Many of our Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium produces GABA which helps the brain heal. I will not get into probiotics but many of them balance our dopamine, serotonin and other neuropeptide levels. Fruit Pectin, resistant starch and jerusalem artichoke root can increase the bacteria that normalize our neuropeptides.

Some of the most potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory herbs are grape seed extract, pine bark extract, curcumin, and adrographis.

Increasing nitric oxide and protecting the heart is very important during these times. Some herbs and supplements that can help improve blood flow and protect the heart or CoQ10, consume foods high in nitrates, bacopa, butchers broom, nattokinase, and grape seed extract. Hawthorne has been found to be very healing for the heart.

Oxytocin levels usually become low. Once sulfation is corrected things like sprirulina can help to increase oxytocin. Cod liver oil, olive oil, avocado oil and chocolate can increase oxytocin. Shepards purse and alfalfa increases oxytocin. Getting a message, caressing, even hugging can increase oxytocin.

Herbs that can help improve adrenal function are adaptogenic herbs like gensing, Lemon balm, ashwangha, eleuthero, rhodiola, maca root, holy basil can help to heal the adrenals. Copper and vitamin C are very important for adrenal function but in high dose vitamin C can break down red blood cells.

Things that can improve dopamine levels are oat straw tea, panax gensing, gingko, tumeric, St Johns wort , velvet bean, and Kava kava can help to increase dopamine levels. Kava kava can irritate the stomach and if taken in high dose or long term can damage the liver. Doing something creative helps to increase dopamine. Even doing things such as puzzles or coloring in coloring books can increase dopamine. Vitamin D increases dopamine but should not be taken in high dose. Melatonin increases dopamine. Fenugreek, anise seed increases dopamine. Doing acts of kindness increases dopamine. Smelling lavender increases dopamine. Calming music increases dopamine. Looking at photos of people you care about increases dopamine.

Increasing endorphins help reduce inflammation and pain. Light exercise even yoga increases endorphins. Laughter increases endorphines. Eating hot peppers increases endorphins. Listening to music, getting sunlight also increases endorphins. B vitamins increase endorphins but some can build up in the body and damage the liver so I would not take them daily. Foods that increase endorphins are citrus fruit, bananas, and foods that contain phenylalanine. Nuts contain folate which increases endorphins. Greek yogurt can increase endorphins.

Often times the circadian rhythm gets disrupted. This can effects our whole body including our microbiome and hormones. It is very important to work to correct this. Melatonin, getting sunlight as soon as a person rises in the morning, avoiding blue light from phones, tvs and personal computers before going to bed helps. Even if you cannot sleep try laying in bed, it can help train your mind and body that is the time to go to sleep.

High hydrogen sulfide producing bacteria in the gut can disrupt the circadian rhythm. Also gut dysbiosis can dysrupt the circadian rhythm. Salt increases hydrogen sulfide production in the gut. A diet deficient in polyamines can also disrupt the circadian rhythm. Foods high in proline especially spermidine helps to increase the microbes that maintain the bodies biological clock.

Things that can help speed up healing in the brain are mugwort things that contain berberine like coptis or bayberry. Fish oil can speed up healing of the brain. Passion flower can help to heal the brain but in high dose or if taken for too long it can start to damage the liver. Some have said passion flower irritates their guts. Lions mane mushroom also helps to speed up healing of the brain. Kudzu has been shown to improve brain function. California poppy improves brain function and reduces pain.

Increasing Sirt1 can speed up all around healing. Nicotinamide increases Sirt1. Grape seed extract increases Sirt1. Pine bark extract, grapes especially muscidine grapes increase Sirt1 expression.

These are things that can help to normalize neuropeptides and hormones in the brain. Mango leaf, wild carrot leaves and flowers, Sweet fennel, most types of lovage, star anise, Juniper scopulorum leaves, Sassafras root, most species of basil, thyme, nutmeg, bacopa, and wax flower root. These also reduce inflammation in the mucus membranes so would help the lungs, blood brain barrier , bladder and many other areas of the body to heal. These should help those who have long Covid symptoms. I would use caution with these herbs many of them if taken in high dose can cause hallucinations and some of them if taken long term like sassafras can be carcinogenic to the liver.

Benefits of perriwinkle.

Written by Lee Stevenson, sorry I am a lousy editor.

This is not medical advice, I am writing this for educational purposes. If you are ill please seek the aid of a qualified and experienced functional medicine practitioner.

Perriwinkle (Vinca minor)

Perriwinkle has potent anti-oxidant, antibacterial and antitumor properties.

Perriwinkle improves blood flow to the brain. It also improves cellular glucose uptake which would imcrease endurance and improve mental function. Because it improves blood flow it helps protect the body from ischemia and hypoxia. There are many Vinca species but Vinca minor has been found the most effective at protecting and healing the brain. It Perriwinkle is high in chlorogenic acid which has many healing properties including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

Perriwinkle can help to prevent stroke and it also speeds recovery from stroke up and helps to prevent the brain damage that usually occurs during strokes. I am mainly speaking of Vinca minor because it is the species of Perriwinkle that contains vinpocetine which is a very potent neuroprotectant and protect the brain from injury and improves brain function. It is so effective at healing the brain that it has been used to correct certain types of birth defects that cause a child to have seizures.

Perriwinkles antioxidant effects comes from the fact it not only activates Nrf2 but stabilizes it preventing it from malfunctioning.

I could not find any toxicity studies so I do not know the side effects other then a few studies mentioning that some using it developed a rash. I would say if you use this one then use it in moderation once you have healed and just use it once in a while to maintain health. With no toxicity studies being done I would use this one wisely.

Benefits of saffron.

Written by Lee Stevenson, sorry I am a lousy editor.

This is not medical advice I am writing this for educational purposes. If you are ill please seek the aid of a qualified and experienced functional medicine practitioner.

Saffron (crocus sativus)

Saffron is high in natural ketones which can help the body heal and provide the brain with an alternative source of energy if the body is having metabolic issues. It contains very potent phytochemicals that are some of the most readily absorbed from any plant so the potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of saffron are very rapid. Saffron should never be taken in high dosages. It has very strong anticoagulant properties so can cause excessive bleeding. Consuming it in excess can also cause nausea, vomiting , dizziness and diarrhea .Saffron is very high in B vitamins. If you buy saffron try to get it unprocessed because when processed and ground often times fillers are added in order to increase profits.

So along with the many health benefits of potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatories saffron also helps improve mood. Saffron has been found to have anticonvulsant, antidepressant properties, it helps reduce withdrawal symptoms from substance abuse. Saffron enhances memory and memory recall. Saffron should be taken at night because it has sedative properties and induces a deeper sleep state. During chronic illness and states of stress glutamate and aspartate levels can get very high causing neurological and brain damage, saffron prevents this from occurring. If saffron is used in high dosages it will actually have the opposite effects then what I mention in this article.

As for skin saffron is one of the most effective sun screens, and works at very low concentrations.

Saffron helps to prevent mucus build up in the lungs and makes it easier to expel it. Saffron also inhibits H1 histamine receptor which could reduce asthma and allergic reactions.

Because saffron has potent anticoagulant properties it helps protect the body and organs from ischemia.

They do not fully know how saffron reduces pain because it is not through receptors like the opoiod receptors. I can tell you from experience it has reduced pain in my body when nothing else would. They believe it may be through it’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. I do not believe that because the relief I usually feel is so rapid that it has to be more then that.

Saffron is effective against E coli and Staph infections. Because it can rapidly reduce inflammation and oxidative stress saffron may be able to protect the body from the damage caused by Sars-Covid. Saffron also stimulates the immune system which may help it to fight Covid. It does so in a way that it does not throw immune balance off because it increases both TH1 and TH2 immune response. Because saffron can inhibit RNA viruses replication and entry into cell it most likely could inhibit Covid. Saffron is also an ACE inhibitor which can inhibit Covids ability to infect the body. Since saffron is a potent anticoagulant it could prevent the excess blood clotting induce by Covid if one is infected.

Saffron may help with autoimmunity and allergies because it inhibits the degranulation of mast cells which would prevent excess histamine release into the body.

Saffron has been found to improve the feeling of well being and prevent depression. It has been found to improve once resistance to the negative effects of emotional stress.

Saffron reduces appetite so be careful taking it before meals.

Saffron helps with PMDD which is a much more severe form of premenstrual syndrome. This is most likely do to the effects of saffron on stress. Excess adrenal upregulation can throw hormone levels off. Saffron has been shown to balance hormone levels out. This is most likely from it’s ability to increase the bodies ability to endure emotional stress.

Saffron improves insulin sensitivity helping to balance insulin and glucose levels.

I would not use saffron daily , I would use it in times it is needed the most or if used daily I would stop using it and only use it once in a while once the issue a person has taken it for has gotten better or has been corrected. It is so potent please never take high dose unless under the supervision of a functional medicine practitioner.

Good and bad of methylene blue.

Written by Lee Stevenson, sorry I am a lousy editor.

I have written this for educational purposes this is not medical advice. If you are ill please seek the aid of a qualified and experienced functional medicine practitioner.

Methylene blue

This is one substance I would only use under the guidance of someone very knowledgeable and experienced at it’s use. Methylene blue is so potent that just a tiny spec of a drop is all that is needed. Any more then that can have some negative effects on the body. Methylene blue is used as an antidote for cyanide poisoning. Methylene blue is also used in metformin poisoning.

Methylene blue can help reverse Alzheimers if used in the correct amount but would most likely cause it if taken in excess. Methlyne blue reduces oxidative stress and can break down the fibrous tissue found in the brains of those with Alzheimers. If taken in excess methylene blue can actually cause excess oxidative stress. In low dose methylene blue enhances memory retention and memory retrieval.

If used correctly methylene blue inhibits many of the inflammatory proteins that cause sepsis, inflammatory disease and autoimmune disease. This is part of the reason methylene blue reduces pain. Methylene silences neurons that are over firing, this is something that occurs in interstitial cystitis.

I do not think a person should take methylene blue daily because it is an MAO inhibitor so can cause serotonin levels to get too high and eventually lead to serotonin syndrome. This also means it could also inhibit the degradation of histamines. Also high dose of methylene blue can inhibit nerve firing.

Low dose methylene blue can improve mitochondrial function. It improves cellular respiration which helps prevent obesity and diabetes.

Methylene blue can help prevent viral infection with RNA viruses such as Covid.

Vassopressin levels get low during sepsis and inflammatory diseases. Methylene blue helps to preserve vassopressin which would speed up recovery time.

Taking high dose amounts of methylene blue alters microbiome to a type that is inflammatory and destructive to the brain but low dose has not effects on the microbiome. Methylene blue in low dose also reduces gut inflammation but because in high dose it alters the microbes to inflammatory ones it will actually increase inflammation in high dose.

Methylene blue helps protect the body from ischemia (oxygen deprivation) induced damage.

When the citric acid cycle (electron transport chain) is not working methylene blue can help bypass it. So those with a sluggish citric acid cycle may be able to reap the benefits of lysine if they supplement with methylene blue. If the citric acid cycle is sluggish a person my react when taking lysine. But lysine has many many health benefits so supplementing when ill is very beneficial.

If taken in low dose methylene blue is cardioprotective. If taken in high does it can cause heart arythmias, coronary vasoconstriction which will increase blood pressure. It can turn urine blue or greenish blue. It can cause hemolytic anemia, hyperbilirubinemia, pulmonary edema, and serotonin toxicity. These are all very serious and life threatening things. This show the importance of having someone very experienced in it’s proper use , so a person should not take this on their own without proper guidance.

Benefits of horny goat weed.

Written by Lee Stevenson , sorry I am a lousy editor.

This is not medical advice , I am writing this for educational purposes. If you are ill please seek the aid of a qualified and experienced functional medicine practitioner.

Horny Goat Weed (Epimedium)

It boost testosterone at very high doses. In low doses it improves bone health. It can increase estrogen in women. It is high in berberine so will have the same anti-inflammatory , antioxidant and antimicrobial effects as others plants that contain berberine. It increases male sexual stamina and increases male fertility. It seems to normalize a womens hormones if they are estrogen dominant. It improves blood flow by increasing nitric oxide. It may help to stimulate repair of damaged heart tissue.

Horny goat weed can actually help nerves to grow back after being damaged. It may protect the brain from damage and help to prevent alzheimer. Because horny goat weed stimulates the growth of neurological tissue it can also stimulate healing in the brain.

It can reinvigorate hair follicles and help with baldness by increasing insulin like growth factor 1 which is usually low in autoimmune disease and inflammatory diseases.

Honey goat weed helps to heal the adrenals and help restore immune system balance. This results in reduced pain.

In high doses horny goat weed can irritate the stomach.

Horny goat weed correct issues in many metabolic pathways including those involved in burning fat.

Benefits of angelica.

Written by Lee Stevenson, sorry I am a lousy editor.

This is not medical advice, I have written this for educational purposes. If you are ill please seek the aid of a qualified and experienced functional medicine practitioner.

Angelica (Angelica Sylvestris)

Angelica Sylvestris is the most research. Most are chemically very similar. The newer highbrid forms of angelica I have not seen studies on so most of the studies I post will be on the old world strains of angelica. It most likely would help with corona infection because it prevents leukopenia which is what causes most death in covid illness.

Angelica has a variety of health benefits from protecting bone marrow to helping to heal the gut. Angelica helps to prevent upset stomaches and nausea. It helps reduce the symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease. Angelica is high in coumarins so it does prevent blood clotting. There is not a lot of research surrounding it but it is related to celery and has a mild celery taste. Celery can balance hormones so I suspect Angelica can. If you look at the phytonutrients many of the nutrients it contains are known to help balance hormones. I am partly inclined to believe this because Angelica does decrease the risk of breast cancer.

Nocturia is a conditon where someone has to wake up to frequently urinate. Angelica helps to reduce the symptoms of nocturia.

Angelica root has potent antibacterial properties. It inhibits IL-6 which is what causes most of the damage during Covid infection.

From personal experience many have used it to relax and prevent muscle spasms. Angelica has been shown to reduce anxiety. It has potent anti-inflammatory effects.

Angelica has been found to inhibit the formation of oxalates in the body. It does this by reducing oxidative stress, reducing inflammation and increasing citrate levels. Citrate prevents the formation of oxalate crystals. It also reduces expression of KIM-1 which prevents renal tube damage. It is high in vanillic acid which prevents liver fibrosis or fatty liver disease. Vanillic acid also helps to prevent obesity.

The leaves and stems of angelica contains phytosterols that are known to reduce and prevent arthritis.

Angelica activates Sirt1 which is an antiaging gene. It also prevents the negative effects of endotoxins on the body. Angelica also improves bone marrow health.

Angelica increases T regulatory cells which help restore immune balance in autoimmune diseases. Angelica also inhibits mTor which promotes longevity and prevents muscle atrophy. Many of the nutrients found in Angelica are known to prevent memory impairment. Angelic improves brain function and promotes healing of neurological tissue.

Side effects , it could cause uterine contractions which could cause miscarriage. Consuming excess amounts of angelic can cause photosensitivity.
